Christine Boscardin, PhD
Professor of Medicine and Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, Director of Student Assessment, UCSF
Christy Boscardin, Ph.D. is a professor in the Department of Medicine and Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care and the Director of Student Assessment in the School of Medicine. Dr. Boscardin is also the Director of the Medical Education Scholarship for the Department of Anesthesia. Her research interests include medical education with a focus on assessment, data science, implementation science, high-value care, and access to quality health care. Dr. Boscardin received her BA from UC Berkeley, her MA from Stanford University, and a PhD in research methodology with an emphasis on applied statistics and advanced quantitative methods from UCLA. She is currently the associate editor for the Journal of General Internal Medicine, the statistical editor for Perspectives on Medical Education, and on the editorial board for Teaching and Learning in Medicine.
John Banja, PhD
Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, Center for Ethics, Emory University
John Banja is a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and a medical ethicist at the Center for Ethics at Emory University. Dr. Banja received a doctorate degree in philosophy from Fordham University in New York and has taught and lectured on topics in medical ethics throughout the United States. He has authored or coauthored over 200 publications and has delivered over 800 invited presentations at regional, national, and international conferences. He served as the Editor of the American Journal of Bioethics-Neuroscience for a decade and currently serves as an associate editor of Radiology: Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Banja has conducted research or educational projects with numerous federal and private organizations including the NIH, the American College of Surgeons, The Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, The National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research, the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, and the Georgia Hospital Association. He is a former board member of the Commission for Case Manager Certification as well as the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. His research interests include topics in patient safety, neuroethics, and artificial intelligence. His most recent book, Patient Safety Ethics, was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2019.
Elia Lima-Walton, MD
Director Data Science and Clinical Analytics, Elsevier
Elia Lima-Walton, MD is a physician informaticist and data science strategist that has been with Elsevier since 2015. She went to medical school at Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico and completed her medical studies at New York Medical College. In her current role as Director Data Science and Clinical Analytics – Health, she leverages her knowledge and expertise in medicine (MD), data science, research, taxonomies, and GenAI to drive strategy in developing novel scalable solutions to improve the clinician experience at the point-of-care and also to support students, educators, and researchers journeys. Her research interests include identification of semantic patterns from unstructured text, text mining, CDS, automatic item generation, knowledge graph expansion, and clinical frameworks.
Elia is an excellent people leader with a passion to help the medical and scientific community at scale for the betterment of humanity. In her immediate circle she manages her talented team of data scientists, clinicians, and localization experts, and thrives on mentoring individuals both internal and external to Elsevier. In her free time you can catch her hiking in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, traveling to exotic lands, or painting.
PANEL 2
Leo Lo, EdD, Professor
Dean of Libraries, University of New Mexico and President-Elect of The Association of College and Research Libraries
Dr. Leo S Lo joined the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences as Dean and Professor in September 2021. With an educational background that includes a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania and graduate degrees in Survey Research, Library & Information Studies, and Screenwriting, Dr. Lo brings a diverse and comprehensive skill set to his role.
Dr. Lo oversees a dynamic and multifaceted operation, including all University Libraries, the University of New Mexico Press, and the Organization Information and Learning Sciences (OILS) programs, which offer Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral degree programs. His responsibilities extend to leading over 120 full-time faculty and staff and managing a budget of over $20 million.
Before joining UNM, Dr. Lo served in various leadership roles across several academic institutions, including Pennsylvania State University and Old Dominion University. His expertise and contributions to the field are further recognized through his active involvement in professional organizations, notably as the current Vice-President/President-Elect of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). He will assume the Presidency in July 2024.
A key area of focus for Dr. Lo is integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into library services and academic support, aligning with the evolving landscape of library sciences and education technology. He actively engages in research and discussions around AI, aiming to enhance AI literacy and its ethical application in academia. Dr. Lo’s work in this domain is characterized by a balance of strategic leadership and a hands-on approach to the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in educational settings.
Sandra Enimil, JD, MLIS
Program Director, Scholarly Communication and Information Policy, Yale University Libraries
Sandra Aya Enimil (she/her) is the Program Director for Scholarly Communication and Information Policy at Yale University Library. At Yale, Sandra contributes to advancing openness by providing strategic insight, information and resources on scholarly communication and open scholarship. She also consults with Yale researchers on using copyrighted materials and assists creators in protecting their own copyright. Sandra is the License Review Steering Committee chair and provides input on licenses of all types for the library. Sandra collaborates with individuals and departments within the library and across campus. She is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and is interested in the intersection of DEI and intellectual property. Sandra earned her Law and MSLIS degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Sandra has BAs in Political Science and Psychology from the University of Michigan and an MA in International Relations from the University of Ghana.
Borui Zhang, PhD
Natural Language Processing Specialist, University of Florida Health Science Center Library
Borui Zhang serves as the Natural Language Processing Specialist at the University of Florida’s Health Science Center Libraries. She provides consultations on natural language processing and machine learning and engages in collaborative research leveraging foundation models across diverse fields, from clinical notes to natural history collections. Borui holds a PhD in Linguistics with a minor in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She leads the AI team in her library department and is currently teaching an undergraduate AI course to students from multiple disciplines.
