Artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly used to design biomedical experiments, to support patient care, to make discovery processes more efficient and to improve the research infrastructure.

Meanwhile, emerging challenges have to be addressed: technical trends and expectations, transparency of methods, reproducibility of results, ethics and fairness in influencing decisions, broadening access to AI technologies, and the need for retooling researchers. A recent report by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) highlights the need for responsible AI development, more attention to augmented intelligence, and effective implementation in health care.
